Do any of these sound familiar?
-
A ringing, buzzing or hissing sound that won't stop, and no one has properly explained why
-
A blocked, full or muffled feeling in one or both ears
-
Everyday sounds that feel too loud, too sharp, or physically uncomfortable
-
A strong reaction to specific sounds, like chewing or tapping, that others don't seem to notice
-
A hearing test that came back "normal," yet you still struggle to follow conversation
-
Being told there is nothing to be done, and to learn to live with it
Told your hearing is "normal", but you're still struggling?

You are not imagining it, and you are not alone. A standard hearing test measures the softest sounds you can detect in a quiet booth. It says very little about how your brain handles sound in the real world: a noisy restaurant, a fast talker, a classroom, a meeting.
That gap between "normal results" and real-life struggle has a cause, and we look for it.
- Hidden hearing loss, damage the standard test cannot see
- Auditory processing difficulties, when the ears work but the brain struggles to keep up
- Listening fatigue, when following conversation is possible but exhausting
We assess beyond the audiogram, from the ear to the auditory cortex, and where support is needed we offer solutions most clinics do not, including low-gain hearing aids for people with normal hearing test results.
Most hearing checks stop at the ear. We do not.
We trace the whole journey of sound, from the outer ear through to the auditory cortex, because the answer to a difficult case is rarely sitting in one spot. We look beyond a normal result, for what is subclinical, and for asymmetry between your two ears, the kind of subtle sign that gets missed elsewhere. Where tinnitus or sound sensitivity is involved, we also assess how the signal engages the limbic system and arouses the autonomic nervous system, because that is where a sound becomes distressing, not just audible.
This thorough approach is why our diagnostic work reaches the right answer, and why the treatment that follows actually fits the person in front of us, rather than a general protocol applied to everyone.

No two ears, and no two brains, are the same.
Auditory disorders sit on a spectrum. Tinnitus can be a faint hum or a roar that takes over the day. Sound tolerance runs from mild discomfort to genuine pain. Listening difficulty can hide behind a perfect audiogram. These conditions shade into one another, and they often travel together, which is why a single test can never tell the whole story.
So we assess the whole spectrum, not one corner of it. Depending on what you present with, that may include speech understanding in noise, loudness tolerance levels, otoacoustic emissions, middle ear and auditory brainstem measures, tinnitus questionnaires such as the TFI, and full auditory processing batteries. We keep testing until the picture is complete, and then we explain it to you in plain language.
Not sure where you sit on that spectrum? Ask us. There is no such thing as a silly question about your ears.

Meet Mini Gupta
Specialist Audiologist: Tinnitus and Sound Sensitivity
Mini Gupta has spent close to two decades working out why ears and brains fall out of step, and how to set them right. She is one of the few audiologists in Australia certified twice in Tinnitus Retraining Therapy under Pawel and Margaret Jastreboff, the clinicians who developed it, and she holds a Fellowship in Tinnitus and Hyperacusis Studies from Salus University in the United States.
Her Melbourne clinic has become the place other clinicians send the cases they cannot resolve: stubborn tinnitus, hyperacusis, misophonia, and complex hearing losses that do not follow the textbook. Patients travel from every state to see her, and consult by telehealth from overseas.
Mini also teaches the profession itself. She runs Mastering Tinnitus Clinical Skills, her training course for audiologists in Australia and abroad, mentors clinicians building their own tinnitus practice, and in October 2026 delivers a keynote at the British Academy of Audiology conference in Liverpool.
Mini is joined by audiologist Ingrid Lau, who leads much of our paediatric and auditory processing work.
